A SIMPLE GUIDE ON ALLERGIES
Allergies are very common in children. They happen when the body overreacts to something harmless like pollen, dust, food, or pets.
Common symptoms:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Rashes or hives
- Headaches or stomach discomfort (rare)
What causes allergies?
- Pollen (trees, grass, weeds)
- Dust and mold
- Animals (dander)
- Food (occasionally)
- Weather changes
How to help your child:
- Limit exposure to known triggers when possible
- Keep windows and doors closed during high pollen days
- Wash hands and change clothes after being outside
- Follow your provider’s recommendations on OTC medications
Allergy shots (if recommended):
- Allergy shots help the body become less sensitive over time
- Can be given regularly over months to years
- Reactions are rare and usually mild (e.g., itching or swelling)
When to call us:
- If symptoms are not improving with treatment
- Breathing problems or wheezing
- Adverse reactions (e.g., swelling of lips or face)
