A SIMPLE GUIDE TO FEEDING YOUR BABY
When can I start giving my baby solids?
Most babies are ready between 4-6 months when they can sit upright, have good head control, show interest in food, and open their mouth for a spoon.
How to start:
- Start with smooth purees (applesauce texture)
- Try baby cereal, fruits, or vegetables
- Mix purees with breastmilk or formula
- Start with 1-2 tablespoons once daily
What to expect:
- Messy meals are normal
- Baby may take time to like new foods and textures
- This should be a fun learning process!
Feeding tips:
- Introduce a new food every 2-3 days
- Expect changes in stool
- Milk intake may decrease as solids increase and take space in the stomach
- Follow your baby’s cues—do not force feed
Allergy guidance:
- Introduce eggs and peanut butter around 6-8 months
- Start with small amounts
- Watch for rash, vomiting, or swelling
- Adverse reactions may not happen after the first time trying these foods
Baby-led weaning (optional):
Around 6 months, babies can try soft finger foods like bananas, avocados, or soft carrots. Start with very soft, small pieces. Call us if you notice choking, poor weight gain, or signs of a food allergy.
